Today, March 8th is the International Day of Women in Ukraine.
Sweet Sister Lidia brought flowers to the office, Sister Galeena and her nine-year-old son, Maax brought a card and gift and I received flowers from the Центральной Приход.
We had our first experience taking a taxi to get to the Центральной Приход (Central Branch) where we had an appointment to meet with a sister immediately following their Women's Day celebration. The taxi driver said (in Russian) that he knew where he was going, which was good because we had no idea how to get there. It turned out that he didn't, either. It was an adventure! So many things here are an adventure.
The men planned and carried out the celebration. The women were to just attend, enjoy and feel special. It seemed as if almost everyone has a beautiful singing voice. Among the songs that men of the branch sang to the women in their lives was one with lyrics that said something like, to be so beautiful should not be allowed.

| 1911 to 2011: One hundred years ago - the first International Women's Day |
"Поздравляю с Восьмое Марта, Международный Женский День" . . .
I congratulate you with 8th of March, International Women's Day.

so elder Hatch, did you remember the woman in your life on this occasion? This sounds like such a fantastic adventure with so many amazing things to learn. do you find out anything interesting about the eggs that you didnt know before? thats about all i know of ukraine and the attention to detail!
ReplyDeleteso which one of those pics is 2011? did you end up making your appointment? getting to where nobody knew on time? Do you see a lot of tulips?
Vylette is still beyond adorable! (in case you forgot)
oh, I wanted to tell you this last Sunday, but I wasnt at a computer nor were you available for the telephone:
ReplyDeleteVylette spent her second day in nursery already . . . at 16 mos of age. one of the ladies who works in the nursery stopped at the library and asked if Vylette could accompany her to the nursery. How could I deny her that? So Kyle and I went to two whole hrs without our little girl - a little strange, but . . . meh.
After church I went a little early to nursery to spy through the peep hole and see how Vylette interacts, and I had a man who was in the nursery for a bit stop and tell me how he JUST LOVES her - they had on a srum beat in there and Vylette started to bop up and down in rhythm. Another lady had to tell me how she just LOVES to sit behind us in church and watch Vylette - all her cute facial expressions and such! Then I go into nursery to retrieve her and the lady who took Vylette with her told me that she kinda got into a little trouble. She was reprimanded a little for bringing in this little toddler who has 2 months left wait! She said that it was entirely her fault, neither Kyle nor I asked her to do it. Then she told me that really people have nothing to worry about because Vylette is older for her age. She can entertain herself, she isnt too attached to her parents, she plays well with others and even because of her some little kids behave better. what wonderful news for a mother to hear!!! But the seconds I walked out the door, Vylette saw just some random woman passing by, and she reached out her arms for this sister to take her away from her own mama! why? she wants anyone but me! it makes me sad . . .
but shes cute!
This post was fun to read. I had just finished a project detailing the effect of the feminist movement on the world and in my research there were several references to "the international day of women" and what a big deal it is elsewhere. Very fun.
